FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Selkirk, MB – James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman issued the following statement regarding the Trudeau Liberals’ failure to support Manitoba farmers and ranchers:
“Over a month ago I sent a letter to federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau requesting assistance to help ranchers and farmers recover from a devastating drought in parts of Manitoba over the past two years.
“Unfortunately, the Minister cannot even reply to a letter in a timely manner, much less come up with solutions to help our producers. The Liberals have made it abundantly clear time and again that they do not care about Manitoba farmers and ranchers, or the contributions they make to our economy and the wholesome food they produce.
“Producers in our riding need disaster assistance that will provide meaningful funding to buy feed, move feed to livestock or livestock to feed, develop waterlines, wells and dugouts for dried out pastures, and have access to income tax deferrals for forced livestock sales due to drought. Without help, many ranchers and farmers will be forced to liquidate their herds. Some of them may never re-enter the industry after this devastating drought.
“This comes as no surprise since Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government has failed to take meaningful action in order to remove trade barriers for Canada’s canola, soy, pulse, beef, and pork industries. Justin Trudeau’s failure to ensure stable export markets for Canada’s agriculture sector, the Liberal Carbon Tax and over-regulation have significantly hurt Canada’s farmers. It is clear that Canadian grain, oilseed and livestock producers are paying the price for the Liberal government’s mistakes at home and abroad.
“Conservatives know that our farmers and ranchers deserve a government who will fight every day to protect their livelihood and understands both the importance of agriculture to our economy and the inherent risk agriculture producers take in their day-to-day operations. An Andrew Scheer government will do just that by putting forward policies that help Canada’s farmers and ranchers get ahead.”
