Selkirk, MB – James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence and Member of Parliament for Selkirk – Interlake – Eastman today raised concerns with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s attempts to cover-up the SNC-Lavalin Affair.
“Justin Trudeau has the choice to do the right thing, but he is continuing to cover-up the SNC-Lavalin Affair instead,” MP Bezan said. “The recent emergency Justice Committee meeting was an opportunity for the Liberals to come clean with Canadians. Instead of being open and transparent as promised, the Trudeau Liberals refused to allow key witnesses to testify.”
Media began reporting in early February that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) pressured former Attorney-General and Justice Minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould to intervene in the criminal prosecution of Montreal engineering and construction giant SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.
“The allegations of interference from PMO in a criminal investigation are shocking,” MP Bezan said. “What appears even more concerning is that the Prime Minister fired Jody Wilson-Raybould on this matter, and then muzzled her. Trudeau needs to let her speak.”
The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives Andrew Scheer has written to the Prime Minister calling on him to immediately waive solicitor-client privilege so that Ms. Wilson-Raybould may speak and to preserve all documents relating to the ongoing SNC-Lavalin Affair.
Opposition MPs worked together to come up with a reasonable witness list to get to the bottom of the affair at the Justice Committee, including three key individuals Canadians must hear from: Jody Wilson-Raybould, the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Gerald Butts, and his senior Quebec advisor Mathieu Bouchard. However, the Liberals used their majority to block Conservative and NDP motions and voted instead in favour of a closed-door meeting.
“Canadians need Trudeau to wave solicitor-client privilege so they can hear the truth from former Attorney-General Jody Wilson-Raybould herself,” MP Bezan said. “The Liberals have made it clear at the Justice Committee meeting that they intend to help Justin Trudeau with his cover-up, instead of helping to find answers for Canadians. That’s why Conservatives will be exploring all legal options to hold Justin Trudeau to account.”
