Selkirk, MB – James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence and Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman today issued a statement marking the 6th anniversary of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, Ukraine:
“Six years ago today, in an attempted annexation of the Crimean peninsula, Russia conducted a sham ‘referendum’ after illegally invading and occupying Ukraine’s Crimea. This unlawful ‘referendum’, held at gunpoint, was rejected by the international community, including by Canada’s previous Conservative government.
“As a result of Russian military occupation, thousands of Ukrainians have been forced to flee from their homes in Crimea to resettle in mainland Ukraine. The Crimean Tatars faced brutal repressions with their representative body Mejlis being banned and leaders being forced in exile.
“From the early days of the occupation, Canada’s Conservatives condemned persecutions of innocent people by the occupying authorities for their political views, language and religion. We have matched our words with action and imposed significant sanctions against individuals involved in the illegitimate referendum and establishing a Canadian-led training mission in Ukraine.
“Canada’s Conservatives will always stand with Ukrainians in their fight for freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
“Крим – це Україна! Crimea is Ukraine!”
