Selkirk, MB – James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman and Shadow Minister of National Defence, released the following statement regarding the 2018 NATO Summit:
“NATO is an invaluable alliance of like-minded nations founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law. As a founding member of NATO, Canada has a duty to its allies to achieve the aspirational defence spending target outlined in the 2014 Wales Summit.
“While our allies have made meaningful progress in reaching that target, Justin Trudeau has failed. His massive and sustained deficits have left us unable to do our part and support our allies on the world stage.
“Justin Trudeau has revoked danger pay from troops fighting ISIS terrorists, cut the special allowance for ill and injured soldiers, and botched the procurement process. He has also missed his own defence spending targets by over $2 billion, in addition to $12 billion in lapsed funding from years previous. Our brave men and women in uniform deserve better.
“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will ensure that our NATO commitments are met, that Canada is a faithful and reliable ally, and that those who serve our country are equipped with the necessary resources they need to keep Canada the true north strong and free.”
