Another scandal and another feigned apology from Justin Trudeau. After five years and numerous ethics investigations, the Prime Minister and his cabinet have given Canadians no indication they have learned from any past mistakes.
This month, the Liberal government cancelled a nearly $1-billion contract with WE Charity after Conservatives brought attention to close ties between the charity and the Liberal government. Margaret Trudeau was paid $312,000 in speaking fees for appearances at 28 WE events between 2016 and 2020. Other Trudeau family members were remunerated as well.
It is appalling the Liberal government only does the right thing after they are caught with their hands in the cookie jar – again. Conservatives are demanding accountability and calling for all of the documents related to the contract to be made public.
This is the third ethics scandal Justin Trudeau has faced himself, not including additional investigations into other Liberal ministers and Members of Parliament. The first, when he was found guilting of accepting a paid vacation to a luxury island. And the second, when he was found guilty for his involvement in the SNC-Lavalin Corruption Scandal. As history continues to repeat itself, more details about the extent to which the Liberal government and their families are tied to the WE Charity are coming to light.
Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, despite both having close family ties to WE, failed to recuse themselves from cabinet discussions regarding the contract to administer a student volunteer program.
Since the abrupt cancellation of the contract, the National Post has reported the Prime Minister’s Office asked WE Charity to host a 2017 Canada Day weekend event on Parliament Hill costing the federal government $1.18 million.
Every single Cabinet Minster must answer for their part in approving this massive contract. The Ethics Commissioner, the Finance Committee, and the Government Operations Committee must all accelerate their investigations into this case. The Ethics Committee must reconvene to hear from witnesses. In addition, the Auditor General and the Procurement Ombudsman must investigate.
Canadians deserve answers and the Prime Minister and Liberal government must be held accountable. Conservatives will not rest until Canadians have answers and this unethical Prime Minister is removed from office.
