Justin Trudeau misleads Canadians on fighter jet file: Conservatives

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 20, 2018

OTTAWA – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, and James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, issued a statement following the release of the Auditor General’s 2018 Fall Report:

“Canada’s Conservatives have spent nearly three years calling on Justin Trudeau to immediately launch an open and transparent competition to replace Canada’s fighter jets.

“When it became clear that the Prime Minister would not comply with this request, Conservatives wrote to the Auditor General in 2016 to ask that he launch an investigation into the Trudeau government’s proposed purchase of interim fighter jets.

“Today’s report confirms what we have been saying all along. Justin Trudeau deliberately misled Canadians by manufacturing a ‘capability gap’ to fulfill a misguided campaign promise, and in the process has put the safety and security of Canadians at risk.

“The price tag for the decision to proceed with the purchase of used Australian fighter jets will cost Canadian taxpayers nearly $3 billion dollars, while also further delaying the delivery of new fighter jets for the Canadian Armed Forces.

“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are calling on Justin Trudeau to apologize to Canadian taxpayers and our brave men and women in uniform, cancel the purchase of used Australian fighter jets, and immediately launch an open and transparent competition to replace Canada’s fighter jets.”
