Ottawa, ON – James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, issued the following statement following Justin Trudeau’s failure to provide funding for the Canadian Armed Forces in Budget 2018:
“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s third budget contains absolutely zero spending for military equipment, and builds on the Trudeau government’s failure to secure any major military procurement projects.
“In an era of reckless spending and historic deficits, Justin Trudeau has made of habit of disrespecting our men and women in uniform by clawing back pay and benefits, and cancelling tax relief measures for Canadian troops deployed in the fight against ISIS terrorists.
“While Canada’s allies continue to modernize their military capabilities, increase defence spending, and honour international military commitments, the Trudeau government has sent our allies a message that Canada is content to sit on the sidelines. For three years, the Liberals have failed to keep promises they have made when it comes to modernizing our military.
“The previous Conservative Government worked hard to undo massive cuts brought in by the last Liberal government during the decade of darkness. We were able to successfully deliver on major procurement projects such as new C-17 Globemaster heavy lift aircraft, new C-130J aircraft, new Leopard II tanks, new Chinook helicopters, took delivery of the first of the Cyclone maritime helicopters, upgraded and purchased new LAV 6 armoured vehicles, plus started major capital projects such as the Aurora CP-140 aircraft upgrades, the Halifax-class frigate modernization and the National Shipbuilding Strategy which included the initial construction of the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships.
“Conservatives will not stand by idly as Justin Trudeau fails to maintain our military capacity. We will continue to fight for the necessary resources and the respect that the Canadian Armed Forces deserve.”
