Conservatives call on Trudeau government to condemn human rights abuses in Iran

The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, today issued the following statement in regard to human rights abuses committed by the Iranian regime.

“In 1988, the Iranian government massacred over 30,000 political prisoners. They killed students, minorities, teenagers and opposition activists. They hung prisoners from cranes and placed them in front of firing squads. This year marks the 30th anniversary of that massacre.

“Last year, we urged The Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to condemn the ongoing human rights abuses in Iran, and prosecute the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre. The Minister never responded.

“We are asking once more for Minister Freeland’s support in guaranteeing that Global Affairs Canada will call for an inquiry into the 1988 massacre, and reference the massacre in a United Nations resolution condemning the human rights situation in Iran. It is imperative that the perpetrators of this heinous crime be held to account.

“The Conservative Party of Canada joins our international allies in demanding that Iran be answerable for both its present-day and historic acts of violence. Last month, Argentine President Mauricio Macri addressed the United Nations General Assembly, urging Iran to cooperate with an investigation into the 1994 Jewish Centre bombing in Buenos Aires. Iran still refuses to accept responsibility for this horrific attack.

“In the years following these atrocities, the Iranian regime has continued to violate the most basic tenets of human rights. Just last month, Iran conducted missile strikes against a Kurdish refugee camp and police headquarters, reportedly killing 18 people and injuring another 49. Amnesty International reports that, in 2017, over half of the world’s recorded executions were carried out in Iran.

“A Conservative government would ensure that Iran does not get away with these blatant human rights abuses. Under Andrew Scheer’s leadership, our government would ensure the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre would be included in the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act (Sergei Magnitsky Law) which targets foreign officials involved in mass violations of human rights. The Conservative Party of Canada will always stand up for the rights of victims targeted by totalitarian regimes like Iran.”
